In 1834-36 she travelled to America and observed American political and social institutions. She travelled to New York, Chicago, and Atlanta and was received by former President James Monroe at his home Montpelier. She also met numerous abolitionist and wrote of the poor state of affairs in America for the black and for women, especially in the field of rights and education. Her critical remarks at the time made her controversial, but the work remains one of the most clear-eyed accounts of the state of American society in the early 19th Century. She was friends with numerous writers and public figures of the day, including George Eliot, Charlotte Bronte, Charles Dickens and Charles Darwin. Princess Victoria invited Martineau to her 1838 coronation.*****************************************We Always Accept Returns if the Item Does Not Match the Description.
