1878 8TF NGC MS61 VAM-9A First Die Pair Top-100 Morgan Silver Dollar Pop 2/0

Description: This listing is for an 1878 8TF NGC MS61 VAM-9A First Die Pair/First Die Marriage. Very scarce first die pair of the popular Morgan Silver Dollar. Easily attributable by the "comma feather reverse" and multiple die markers have also been photographed from coin you will receive to confirm the accuracy of the attribution. VAM-9 and the scarcer clashed VAM-9A were recorded as the first die pair thanks to a member of the press who was on hand to document the delivery of several presentation pieces of the new Morgan Dollar offered to then President Rutherford B Hayes. Those coins are also preserved and later studied by Leroy Van Allen himself. A major rarity in any state of preservation, but uncirculated examples are truly rare. At the time of listing this coin was tied with one other for the finest ever certified at NGC, though it is possible some VAM-9A examples are housed in VAM-9 holders. This is especially the case at PCGS since they don't they don't differentiate VAM-9 and 9A and house them all under the VAM-9 umbrella. Regardless though this coin is extremely rare in uncirculated grades with the VAM-9 and VAM-9A die pair. For clarity, VAM-9 and VAM-9A are the same variety with the die clashes that appeared as the dies progressed into a later die state. Richly multi color toned coin that is slightly reflective. It is free of heavy marks and has an especially clean cheek for the '61 grade. Some light bag mark chatter on the delicate reflective surfaces explains the grade.
