Description: FOR PURCHASE ~ The Great Events by Famous Historians Volume VIII, A. D. 1438-1516Ed. Charles F. Horne, John Rudd. The National Alumni: New York. 1905.The Great Events by Famous Historians is a large set comprised of beautiful volumes that contain essays by famous historians and scholars, either contemporary to the period covered or to the period of publication. Volume VIII includes the Wars of the Roses, the development of printing, Mahomet II, Ivan the Great, the discovery of North America (Christopher Columbus, Amerigo Vespucci) the Medici family, & more. Among the included writings are pieces by Washington Irving, Vespucci, Machiavelli, and Columbus. The leather binding is a facsimile of a book "considered the most artistic mosaic binding design in existence" created in 1710 by Antoine Michel Padeloup, Royal Binder to both France & Portugal. (The original now lives in The British Museum.) Volume includes illustrations with protective tissue leaves. Frontispiece by Otto Seitz depicts Edward IV's two sons in the Tower of London (during the reign of Richard III). Printed on thick, deckled-edge paper with top edges gilt. There is wear/cracking at outer board hinges, so delicate handling is recommended. However, the binding is excellent and many pages are unopened--volume thus appears never read.
