The large buildings over there on the European side at the extreme left belong to the American (Roberts) College, well known all through this part of the world for the practical ability and high standards of its graduates-men of various nationalities, races and religions. The big stone tower with connecting walls running down to the water side is Rumeli Hissar (Europe Castle), built in 1452 by the Turks, to mark and keep a foothold on that side of the strait. The following year they succeeded in taking Constantinople itself after a long and terrible siege. All through the course of history this water line between the two continents has been the scene of significant movements and struggles. Greeks, Persians, Romans Scythians, Goths and Huns, Turks, Genoese and Venetians have camped on these banks or crossed the deep and treacherous current, intent on schemes for the downfall of enemies and the control of this passageway between two seas. Thousands of European knights, the flower of mediaeval chivalry, crossed the Bosphorus on their way to fight in the Crusade for the freedom of the Holy Land. In 1455 Turkish power reached from this Asian side across into Europe, seizing and cruising Constantinople. The old Latin poet, Ovid, told how the nymph Io, transformed by Juno into a heifer, swam across this strait, pursued by a tormenting gadfly. In his later years Ovid himself sailed through here in bitterness and sorrow, to end his days in exile on the shores of the Black Sea. Photo measures 9.75 x 8 inches. Photo Is dated 1915.
