This vintage photograph is offered for sale as a collectible item and conveys no transfer of copyright. 1956 Press Photo Medal in honor of Our Lady of the Snows by Leon Darkowski Washington, D.C. - The above medal was created in honor of Our Lady of the Snows under whose patronage and protection the Catholic men of Operation Deepfreeze have placed themselves. The medal was designed by Lieutenant Leon S. Darkowski, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Catholic chaplain of Navy mobile construction battalion (special detachment "Bravo", which will winter in Antarctic outposts with United States scientists. Pope Pius XII will receive a solid gold replica of the medal through Francis Cardinal Spellman, Archbishop of New York. His Holiness has been asked to give the Papal blessing to Operation Deepfreeze II. Figures on the medal represent the Virgin Mary standing beneath the Aurora Australis (southern light) above which soars an airplane. To the left is an icebreaker at work; at the virgin's feet stand a penguin and a Navy explorer, who at the bottom is a tractor, chief mode of Antarctic transportation. The medals will be available to all members of Antarctic expedition. Photo measures 7 x 9.25 inches. Photo Is dated 1956.
