Description: Poster publicizing the March and Rally for Peace, a demonstration against the Vietnam War, New York City, 1968. Vietnam War era poster depicts four peace demonstrators, each holding a different sign carrying an antiwar message, including a young black man with sign quoting Mohammad Ali, "No Viet Cong Ever Called Me Nigger."The March and Rally took place on April 27, 1968. Twin parades down Fifth Avenue and Central Park West converged at Sheep Meadow in Central Park, where the crowd was to be addressed by "famous speakers & entertainers." One of the scheduled speakers was Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. In his place, his widow Coretta Scott King read the notes from the speech he was to give, "Ten Commandments on Vietnam." The notes were in his pocket when he was assassinated. This poster graphically demonstrates the convergence of the civil rights and peace movements occurring in the late '60s, a linkage Dr. King frequently made in the year before his death.SIZE: 16 x 22 in.
