Ruins of St. Paul's--Macau's most famous landmark shines with splendor following a one year restoration that included stabilization of the structure and cleaning of the stonework and bronze statues. The church, once described by European royalty "as the greatest monument to Christianity in all the Eastern lands," was built in 1602 with the assistance of Japanese Christian artisans who had fled from feudal persecution in Nagasaki. It was destroyed by fire in 1835, leaving only the façade in staircase. Photo measures 8 x 10.25 inches. Photo is dated 05-05-1992.
