The US Mint Explains: “U.S. Mint uncirculated coins are struck on special presses using greater force than what is used for circulating coins, producing a sharp, intricately detailed image. The coins are sealed in blisters and displayed in folders”. Note: Not all coins within the sealed blisters are of equal quality, some examination should be done to find the most outstanding examples. Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) is a term that is used to describe the quality of coins that may not necessarily be of the uncirculated coin strikes. Uncirculated Coin Strikes are available from the Philadelphia and Denver mints. ★★★★ Circulating Coin Strikes / Excellent Quality / Only found in US Mint rolls and bags. These are the best “circulating coin strike” coins available. However for sharp strike image quality, they cannot compare to “uncirculated coin strikes” as mentioned above. In this category there are two lines of thought regarding which of these has the best quality coins after minting. The bags or the rolls. Some feel that the 100-coin bag contains the better of the two package types, since the US mint rolls have to pass through additional processes to be rolled and wrapped which tend to mark them up. So find the best circulating coins in US Mint bags. Others feel that the loose coins in the bags will receive unwanted bag marks in shipment, while the tightly wrapped rolls are more secure in shipment. Whichever argument seems valid to you, to find a coin worthy of grading is possible and requires examination with the aid of magnification. CIRCULATING COIN STRIKE COINS ARE DESTINED FOR THE CIRCULATING CYCLE, SEE GRAPHIC: RAW / BANK PACKAGING ★★★★ Circulating Coin Strikes / Great Quality / Found in Federal Reserve Bank rolls (from federal coin terminals, contracted carrier and depository services like Loomis and Brinks) that can be acquired in financial institutions regionally and locally. These cannot compare to an “uncirculated coin strikes” as mentioned above, 5 stars . The strikes are weaker. Look for complete rolls of these coins as they are first released to the public. These are unsearched coins because they are wrapped by the Federal Reserve Banks and their contractors after receiving them in bulk from the US Mint. You can find them by the box (50 rolls) or by the roll. Often times the ender coins will have ringed scratch which is called the ring of death. Available from the Philadelphia and Denver mints.★ - ★★★ Circulating Coin Strikes / Poor to Good Quality / Found in Customer and Federal Reserve Bank rolls, pocket change, etc. These retain good to poor quality as they are circulated throughout commerce.
