Other: Unusual early view of the ruins of Modern Jericho by Bonfils, most likely pirated by another photographer since the figure at the left is montaged in over the point where Bonfils’ in negative credit usually appears. Also, the cropping is tighter in this printing than usually seen with the Bonfils’ credit. Felix Bonfils (1831-1885) was a French photographer active in the Middle East from the 1860s until his death in 1885. He created a remarkable record of the Middle East second to none. His son, Adrien took over the business upon his father’s death carrying on until around 1900. Additionally, Lydie Bonfils, Felix’s wife continued producing images after that even issuing her own catalog and remaining in the Middle East until forced to evacuate at the beginning of the First World War.
