Description: From a local estate auction: a lovely christening gown from the early 1900s. This is a classic, heirloom quality gown with hand sewn detail. It is made of cotton lawn, semi-sheer, that has mellowed to a gentle cream color. It is quite long and has long sleeves. The top has a narrow lace ruffle around the neck; below this the front is embellished with hand embroidered flowers in the center, flanked on each side by a narrow band of lace and 12 tiny pin tucks - on each side! The decoration extends about 6" down the front. The sleeves are full and rounded, ending in a lace ruffle. In the back there is a long center placket opening that closes with two tiny pearly buttons, and the buttonholes are hand sewn, as I hope you can see in the closeup. The button placket is flanked by 4 more pin tucks on each side. This is cut very full in the skirt and has a deep hem. I have included measurements: 9" across front from shoulder to shoulder;13" across front at underarms;7.5" sleeve length from shoulder to end;~29" total length; and28" sweep across front I have laundered and pressed this and found the fabric to be in sound shape, soft and supple and not brittle. This is in wonderful antique condition with only three issues: a pinhole in the front to the side below the underarm, and a very slight tan mark on the back about 3" from the hem. The right shoulder needs one or two stitches at the seam. All of these are shown in the last closeup photos. Despite these, it is ready for new generations of babies.
