Description: UNIQUE and Beautiful antique folding hand fan. This sweet fan may have been a souvenir for serviceman overseas to bring home. This fan is made of wood that has been hand painted and hand pierced/carved. There is a little message across the top that reads "To My Sister". This was possibly created in Japan. It opens and closes smoothly. Very nice vintage condition, there is a silk ribbon woven across the top to keep the blades lined up, the ribbon is loose on one end, one of the guards is chipped near the top -as shown. Measures 9 1/4" long closed Fans were a large part of a Victorian ladies attire and they served a larger purpose than to cool things down! Fans were used by ladies as a form of silent communication between her and a prospective gentleman or a close friend, they were used to give permission to a kiss, to convey the lady was already taken and even sometimes angrily. In fact there was entire silent language built around the fan and its position and it is fascinating to research. It was widely known by both sexes what the different fan positions were and since fans were such an important part of social etiquette they were often one of the most decorative items a lady owned. I am always happy to answer questions. Thank you for shopping Forever Chic Textiles!03-02-24
