Antique French Sterling Silver NÉCESSAIRES DE VOYAGE Minerva #1 Vanity Travel

Description: Nécessaires de voyage are essentially a much more sophisticated version of today's toiletry or carry-on bags. Our rare travel set is from the mid to late 1800’s and has the “Minerva Marking, No. 1” from Paris. This is the top of the line sterling silver. The Minerva Markings for pieces minted in Paris show the head of the Minerva facing right with a small “number one” above the forehead. This exquisite all leather French Vanity travel case has multiple compartments for grooming on the go. There is also a leather compartment for travel documents. Ours has six exquisite glass bottles-one cologne bottle that contains a beautiful stopper, as pictured. The inside of the bottle tops are gold. Also includes a mirror encased in leather measuring 7x4.5" and a grooming kit encased in leather. We believe the handles may be Bakelite. There is also a wonderful small perfume bottle encased in silver. The comb cover is damaged, as pictured and the brushe's handle is broken. Measures 15 X 10.5 X 5.5 inches. There is also a travel STAMP on the side of the luggage showing entry into the United States from France. It is monogrammed RF. There is a cloth cover that is also embossed RF. These travel sets were usually created for people of means that travelled. They were a convenient means of transporting their personal belongings, or necessities of daily life, while their remaining belongings could be stored in less accessible trunks. These compact nécessaires were an elegant solution. The travel set is in very good condition overall. However, the comb’s leather case is damaged—as pictured— and the handle of the brush is broken, but still there. The cover is a bit tattered. The silver needs a good cleaning, and the bottles are in excellent condition. This is truly a RARE find.
