Description: Antique Silver Toddy Ladle George III, with 1787 Coin Inset In the early eighteenth century, fashionable people drank punch communally straight out of the bowl. By mid-century this practice had begun to wane, and in genteel circles silver punch ladles were used to transfer punch from the bowl in to individual glasses. Silver punch ladles were an expensive fashion statement. This Georgian period silver toddy ladle inset with a silver George III 1787 coin. It has a twisted handle with a silver ferrule at the top. The toddy has a simple oval bowl with a gently folded lip to aid pouring and a patterned edge to rim. The bowl is beautifully engraved with the initials ‘LMC’. The silver bowl of the ladle does have very minor age related wear but for a Georgian piece of silver the overall condition is very good. No hallmarks apparent which again is not uncommon for such items in this period, however the coin inset in the bowl is dated 1787. The silver tested as 925. The coin is a George III coin minted in 1787, it depicts his laureate and draped bust facing right with the Latin legend surrounding: GEORGIVS. III DEI. GRATIA. The reverse has crowned cruciform shields, the garter star at centre, surrounded by the date 1787 and the legend: M.B.F. ET. H. REX. F.D. B.ET. L. D. S. R. I. A. T ET. E. 0ffered in good antique condition with some minor deformations of the bowl but nothing major. It measures approx. 8cm in width by 5.2cm by 2.4cm for the ladle bowl and is 36.5cm in length and weighs 45g. A great addition to any silver collection. Please see pictures for more details.
