Description: Offered here is what I believe to be an unusual variant or die combination of the Octavian & Julius Caesar dupondius from Gaul. I believe that it shows Octavian and either Julius Caesar or Agrippa but, since I am uncertain of the exact issue even after much research, I must list it as "un-identified" at this time. Struck at the Lugdunum mint c. 36BC on a 29mm bronze flan weighing 23.3gm., this coin has some very interesting details. Wildwinds has a similar example listed with a palm branch between the two busts, more visible obverse legend and a similar yet more complex galley reverse with the single "meta" (turning post at race tracks) structure on the deck, the oars and the railing visible as well, listed as RPC I 515 ; Girard Lyon7; SNG Copenhagen 689. In my opinion the bust on the left strongly resembles that of Divus Julius Caesar and the upside-down legend DIVI F above the two busts is plainly visible on this coin which I believe indicates that this must be the issue with Julius Caesar. The much simpler galley reverse on this coin seems to suggest the Augustus & Agrippa issue which is very similar. Any information from fellow ebayers would of course, be greatly appreciated. In the beautiful condition shown with a somewhat granular surface and wear but some nice details and even patina as shown in the photos.
