DESCRIPTION: - This is a cabinet card of a rather dramatic judge routinely referred to as “Recorder Goff.” John William Goff, Sr. (January 1, 1848 – November 9, 1924) was an American lawyer and politician from New York. There is a fairly complete Wikipedia page on him and some of his rulings. His name is associated with strange cases that range from sentencing the rich to levying the death penalty only to have the State do a retrial to possibly avoid having the first woman electrocuted – the second trial ended up in acquittal based upon insanity. It was said that he confronted a forger while in Toronto Canada and the forger returned to the US for trial without being formally extradited. One common account tells of the trial of Maria Barberi who slit the throat of her lover from ear to ear because he had broken his promise to marry her. The first trial was brief, and Recorder Goff sentenced her to death for killing Domenico Cataldo. But the newspapers soon discovered that Maria would be the first woman to be electrocuted. The sob-sisters gathered together, and worked for a year and a half, headed by Contessa di Brazza to free Maria. Another trial came in Nov. 1896, and the newspaper gave vent to columns of unmitigated tripe It is to be admitted that some of the worst of the sob-sisters were really brothers.
