Description: Makonde produce face masks worn during 'mapiko' dances and 'ngoma' ceremonies. The Makondes of northern Mozambique and southern Tanzania wore helmet masks called 'lipiko' during young men's ceremonies. Makonde boys and girls must undergo a six-month period of imprisonment, during which they are taught singing, dancing and hands-on activities. The rules of adult life, sexual life, and marriage obligations are addressed to them. This initiation concluded with festive ceremonies featuring ""midimu"" male dancers. The latter wearing a female mask with a suit named ""amwalindembo"", mimicked the suffering accompanying childbirth.
