Riggs at 55 was a self avowed male chauvinist who said that the women’s tennis game was inferior to the men’s And that even at 55 he could beat any woman tennis player. He had defeated Margaret Court already. King at first declined the challenge aka the “Match”. But eventually gave in and it was marketed as THE BATTLE OF THE SEXES. 3 sets - WINNER TAKE ALL!!!!!! King felt that a loss would set back women’s equality by 50 years. Unfortunately, due to different circumstances it is happening in 2023. HOWEVER IN 1973- her win in straight sets over Riggs legitimized women’s tennis and moved toward equal pay!!!!! Not only in tennis but in the mainstream workforce. In 2017 there was a MOVIE about this titled, “BATTLE OF THE SEXES”. Starring Emma Stone as King and Steve Carrell as Riggs.
