Both joints are stamped with the same serial number K63XX. This particular model was the top-of-the-line semi-professional clarinets offered by Buffet Crampon, which was changed to E-13 in 1981-1982. Master Model clarinets are the “cream of the crop” and are a step above the regular “Evette & Schaeffer”s with respect to craftsmanship and sound. These clarinets have many technical characteristics (such as undercutting on the lower joint, which is missing on regular Evette & Schaeffer’s), which make them similar to the famed professional R-13 models. All clarinets of this model were produced in France; the K-series Master Models were always made in the main Buffet factory, by the same staff and with the same tools as their professional clarinets. I provide all this information to emphasize that these are not your average off-the-shelf intermediate Buffets that you can buy in your local music store; they are very special and far superior in craftsmanship, response and quality of the sound. If you want to learn more about these fine instruments, I would recommend checking web-pages such as http://www.clarinetpages.net/vintage-odd-brands/evette-schaeffer or http://www.clarinetperfection.com/clsnBuffetES.htm. The cosmetic condition for this instrument is very good for a vintage clarinet. The wood is dark, lovely, and has a few scratches. There is very little plating loss on the keys. The barrel is a replacement and has some obvious scratches on it. There are no visible cracks and no clear evidence of past crack repairs. It needs a complete overhaul to be playable, but it can be restored to playing condition by a skilled technician. This is an excellent buy for a player looking for an intermediate or semi-professional wood clarinet with great craftsmanship.
