Description: [SANTA BARBARA, CALIFORNIA, 20TH CENTURY PHOTOGRAPHY] TWO, SIXTH PLATE PORTRAIT AMBROTYPES OF A MEXICAN-ANGLO COUPLE FROM THE SANTA BARBARA AREA. The images are in a very nice thermoplastic case by A.P. Critchlow (pat. date 1856). There is a slight rose tint to the cheeks of the couple. The woman has gold gilding on her left hand and her earrings. Also two other related ambros (one other sixth plate in a period case with MOP (mother of pearl) accents & another 1/9 plate) which we believe are younger versions of the man by himself and perhaps with his sister. The images were from the estate of an actress from the Santa Barbara area and collected them in the 1960s. We don't believe she was related to them, but likely found them in a local tag sale or flea market. The portrait of the woman clearly is NOT anglo and very much resembles Hispanic women of the time and era. The man is clearly anglo and we hope some additional research (of local historical & academic institutions) may reveal what anglo-mexican marriages occurred between the mid 1850s and mid 1860's and we may have a positive ID with some effort. Even if a positive ID isn't achieved, this couple is obviously of mixed ancestry and interesting regardless. If an attribution can be achieved, that would be amazing. An engaging and well preserved image worthy of additional research and perhaps a positive attribution. Please email any questions -
