One of the famous Union Regiments, the Sharpshooters consisted of individual companies from the various states, organized by Hiram Burden, a noted marksman of the day. Armed with Sharps breechloaders, the two regiments distinguished themselves in combat while serving with the Army of the Potomac. Dressed in green cloth and leather leggings, they claimed participation in sixty-five actions and battles, especially distinguishing themselves at South Mountain, Chancellorsville and at Gettysburg.
