Description: Record of inscriptions in the Cemetery and Building of the Unitarian, Formerly Denominated the Independent Church, Archdale Street, Charleston, S.C., from 1777 to 1860 Author: GILMAN, Caroline (ed.) Title: Record of inscriptions in the Cemetery and Building of the Unitarian, Formerly Denominated the Independent Church, Archdale Street, Charleston, S.C., from 1777 to 1860 Publication: Charleston, (SC): Walker, Evans and Co., 1860 Description: First edition. 12mo. 190 pp. [plus an additional section of blank leaves, each with a printed head, for manuscript additions, unused here]. Engraved plate of the cemetery. Cover title: "Inscriptions in the Unitarian Cemetery, Charleston, S.C." Inscribed by the editor (signed "C.G.") to Dr. F.Y. Porcher, Professor of Obstetrics and Diseases of Women and Children at the Medical College of South Carolina in Charleston. Gilman (1794-1888), a native of New England, moved to Charleston in 1819 with her husband Samuel, a Unitarian Minister who had just been called to serve as pastor of this church, residing there until 1870; during that period she published a steady stream of prose, poetry, and local history, winning a reputation as one of the most popular American women writers of her day. This work was issued, in part, as a memorial to her husband who died in 1858. Still a good solid copy with a wonderful Charleston association. Original gilt-stamped brown cloth (spine ends frayed, a little erosion along joints). (#4707).
