Description: A carte-de-visite showing a view of HMS Cyclops, the lead ship of the Cyclops-class breastwork monitors, built for the Royal Navy in the 1870s. The ship has a Wikipedia page all of its own. Apparently, she ‘spent most of her career in reserve; her only sustained period in commission was four months in Portland Harbour, during the Russo-Turkish War in 1878, when the British were trying to force the Russians to end the war without allowing them to seize Constantinople. Cylops was sold for scrap in 1903.’ Photographed by Jabez Hughes of Ryde on the Isle of Wight. Condition: please sea scans. The print presents a few dark smudges in the area of the sky but is otherwise in excellent condition, as is the mount. A pencilled inscription recto in the margin identifies the ship. Dimensions: the dimensions of a standard carte-de-visite are approximately 4.1" by 2.5" (10.5 cm by 6.3 cm). All photographs are securely packaged using recycled cardboard. I go to the post office at least twice a week, usually on Monday and Thursday. I'm happy to combine postage on multiple purchases.Orders over £100 will only be shipped via registered mail, which costs £5 extra.
