The village is located in a rural area of rolling hills in central Ohio. It is 35 miles east of Columbus and 7 miles west of Newark, the county seat. Churches occupy prominent positions at the center of the village and in the life of the community. At the intersection of Broadway and Main Street are located the First Presbyterian Church, Centenary United Methodist Church, St. Luke's Episcopal Church and the United Church of Granville (UCC). Nearby are Pilgrim Lutheran Church and St. Edward's Catholic Church. Also, located in the village are Spring Hills Baptist Church, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Jehovah's Witnesses, Union Station Community Church and Bethel Apostolic Church. The Centenary Methodist Church at Granville, Ohio, was built in 1884. The first Methodist sermon in the community was preached in the summer of 1810. GRANVILLE CENTENARY UNITED METHODIST CHURCH Methodists have a long history in Granville, Ohio. The Methodist Circuit Riders appeared in the village of Granville in 1809. The first church building was built on the northeast corner of the village square property in 1824, sharing the site with the community building. The church had galleries but no heat causing the congregation to meet in the winter months in other locations of warmth. Sixty years passed until the 1884 brick Methodist Episcopal Church was built. It was a work of love and devotion with members donating their time, wood for pews and wainscoting, bricks and furnishings. Methodism had been in Granville 74 years. By 1924, serious consideration was made to building a new church, as the old one had many problems. Instead major remodeling began with the removal of the large rotten and dangerous steeple. Thirty-four stained glass windows were installed and changes in the church were made to adapt to the times. In 1956 the basement under the church was dug out to create space for a kitchen, fellowship center, two additional rooms, a furnace room and the congregation continued to grow. Sunday School rooms were in great demand in 1960, and although two houses on Linden Place were purchased to be used for that purpose, the added space was not sufficient. By 1965, the Education unit to the north of the church became a reality with many rooms for classes, offices and restrooms. With the removal of the Linden Place houses, a parking lot was now available. The addition of the Contemporary service in 1999 and a growing youth program again created need for more space. The 2003 addition of Shepherd Hall and Mary Martha Room plus a renovation of the Education building with the addition of a long need elevator filled the corner of the village lot designated “for the public good”. Following in the footsteps of the Village that celebrated the Granville Bicentennial in 2005, Centenary United Methodist Church proudly celebrated their Bicentennial in 2010.
