Description: Sun Yat-Sen was a medical doctor and political theorist who helped lead the overthrow of the dictatorial Qing dynastyin favor of republic in 1911, then becoming its provisional president. He gave way in 1912 so a distinguished general, Yuan Shih-Kai, could become president. After Yuan was removed in 1916, Sun returned to politics as a leader of the Kuomintang Party, which held power in 1934 when this coin was minted. The Chinese characters on the obverse translate as "Year 23 of the Republic of China,"and on the reverse as "One Yuan."
