Description: An exceptionally rare Brittle Starfish, Paleocoma egertoni Eype, on an original seafloor fossil plate or matrix from the Jurassic period, around 185,000,000 years ago. The graceful animal is displaying elegantly on the soft sandstone matrix plate, which seems to float in the bronze mount. More and more a rare discovery in the Seatown heritage Jurassic coast layers. Seatown and Eype, situated on the West Dorset coast, which is part of the Dorset and East Devon World Heritage Coast, has traditionally been renowned for the uniquely occurring Eype fossil starfish bed. Brittle starfish (brittlestars) fossils preserved on soft, thick sandstone strata within the Jurassic period Middle Lias. It is reputed that a single catastrophic event, such as a storm or tsunami, caused the local population of marine life situated in what is now southern England to be covered over very quickly. Which could account for the perfect preservation in this region.
