Description: Franklin Library leather edition of "The Selected Writings of William Gilbert, Galileo Galilei, and William Harvey," a Limited edition, Illustrated by Marc Yankus, one of the 25TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE GREAT BOOKS OF THE WESTERN WORLD series, published in 1984. William Gilbert, who lived from 1540-1603, was a physician to QUEEN ELIZABETH and JAMES I. He declared the earth to be a magnet in his 'De Magnets' in 1600---the first great scientific book to be published in England. Galileo Galilei, who lied from 1564-1642, was an Italian astronomer and physicist. Born at Pisa, his family was from Florence. Galileo made important discoveries about Jupiter's satellites and the rotation of the earth. His observations brought him into conflict with the Inquisition, and in 1633, he was compelled to repudiate the COPERNICAN THEORY and when he muttered 'and yet the earth moves,' he was sent to prison. William Harvey, who lived from 1587-1657, lived in England. He expounded a new theory of the circulation of the blood. Harvey was the physician to KING CHARLES I and was present with him at the battle of Edgehill in 1642. 406 pages. I offer Combined shipping.
