Description: French 19C Carved Wood Imperial Terrace Double Staircase Architectural Model Very Rare Architectural Shape! Antique 19th Century French Carved Mahogany or Oak Wood Imperial Terraced Double Staircase Architectural Model. Wood is carved, joined, turned, bent and planed. This is a very rare Antique 19th Century French Carved Mahogany or Oak Wood Imperial Terraced Double Staircase Architectural Model. The wood is carved, joined, turned, bent and planed in the typical Camponnage tradition of teaching architecture and design through drafts and 3-D models. This staircase seems to combine the terraced staircase with the imperial staircase and the double staircase model. It is a like a terraced staircase, popular in Baroque gardens, but this is clearly for an interior building, as it is actually not terraced (receding towards a hill, but returns to create large open hallway. It is possible that this may have been a design for a department store, as it allows a feeling of openness, and allows the stairs to lead to 4 different floors. There is a very similar French 18th century staircase in the Cooper-Hewitt Design Museum, NY. "This fine triple-height staircase model is similar to one designed by Robert Adam for 20 Portman Place in London. The model’s sustaining pillars ensure stability in place of the walls used in Adam’s staircase. The pillars are joined in a manner characteristic of a builder rather than a compagnonnage-trained cabinetmaker."
