Description: There are currently more than 30,000 surgeons in the United States holding certification by the American Board of Surgery. Certification in general surgery requires completion of a qualifying (written, part I) examination and a certifying (oral, part II) examination. In addition, recertification every 10 years is mandatory for all holders of certificates dated after 1976. Over the past 5 years, approximately 20% of first-time examinees and 80% of reexaminees failed the part I (qualifying) examination. Results for the part II (certifying) examination reveal a failure rate of about 20% for the first-time examinees and 40% for candidates taking reexaminations. In an effort to better prepare candidates for both the qualifying and certifying examinations, a Surgical Board review course has been given annually by the Department of Surgery of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine/Montefiore Medical Center. This book is based to a large extent on the syllabus of this course. It is designed to help surgeons prepare for both primary and recertification examinations given by the American Board of Surgery. It is obviously impossible for a text of this size to review in detail all aspects of general surgery. It is our hope that this book will provide a framework for review and enable the reader to select areas in which he/she requires additional study. Each chapter has a list of references that provides the reader with additional sources of information. Sample questions and answers are included. The format for the written examination combines various types of multiple-choice questions and a series of patient management problems. The examiners in the oral examination expect sound basic knowledge in addition to logical and appropriate clinical judgment. This book provides the reader with the basic factual material in both general surgery and the surgical subspecialties required to approach the qualifying and certifying examinations with confidence. Success in one's initial attempt at primary certification or recertification should be an attainable goal. We wish you all success in achieving it Michael S. Gold
