The book was originally intended to be published in May of 1936, but was delayed until June to be released simultaneously with the book club edition. The publisher had already begun producing copies bearing the May date before the request to delay publication, and rather than destroy these copies, they simply resumed printing copies with the corrected date of June. This copy comes with an original price-clipped first edition dust jacket (second issue, with "New Macmillan Novels" on the rear panel; third issues and beyond have reviews in this location). Bibliographic reference: Bridges (1995, p. 7).-Condition and Description: Publisher's grey cloth, lettered and ornamented in dark blue, 1037 pp. Hinges and binding tight. Front and rear boards show minimal wear and are slightly bowed. Text free and clear of writing and underlining. The original second issue dust jacket is bright and presents well, but it's price clipped and has a small closed tear on the bottom right corner of the front flap, which has been archivally and reversibly mended on the verso (underside; refer to the last two pictures for closeups).
