The Dhokra art manufacturing process is an ancient and intricate metal casting technique that uses the lost wax casting method. This process has been practiced in India for over 4,000 years, especially by artisans in regions like Chhattisgarh, West Bengal, and Odisha. The steps involved in crafting Dhokra art are:1. Creating the Core The process starts with the creation of a rough core, usually made from clay. This core is the base structure of the object being sculpted and gives it shape. The clay core is often mixed with rice husk or other natural binding materials to strengthen it.2. Wax Modeling After the core dries, a layer of beeswax or paraffin wax is applied over it. The wax is then carefully molded by hand into the desired shape, adding intricate details like the figurine’s features, patterns, and designs. This wax model reflects the final design of the object.3. Applying the Outer Clay Layer Once the wax model is complete, it is covered with another layer of fine clay. This clay coating forms the outer mold that will hold the molten metal during casting. Multiple layers of clay are applied, allowing each to dry before adding the next. This ensures the mold’s durability and detail preservation.4. Melting the Wax (Lost Wax Technique) The prepared mold is then baked in a kiln or fired in an oven. As the clay hardens, the wax inside melts and escapes through small drainage holes, leaving a hollow cavity between the clay core and the outer mold. This is why the process is known as the "lost wax casting technique."5. Pouring the Molten Metal Once the wax has been lost, molten metal, typically brass or bronze, is poured into the hollow cavity left by the wax. The metal fills the space, taking the shape of the intricate wax model that was initially created.6. Breaking the Mold After the metal cools and solidifies, the outer clay mold is broken away, revealing the metal figurine inside. Since each mold is broken during the process, each piece of Dhokra art is unique and cannot be replicated exactly.7. Finishing Touches The final step involves polishing and refining the metal sculpture. The artisan smooths out rough edges and may add additional details or embellishments. In some cases, patina or chemical treatments are applied to give the sculpture an aged or rustic finish.
