Description: PLEASE NOTE THIS IS THE FIRST TIME I HAVE EVER OFFERED ANY SIGNED PHOTOGRAPHS FROM THE WWII VETERANS WHO INSPIRED HBO’S THE PACIFIC. Please note that these 4x6 photographs where printed in the early 2000's then personally autographed by that veteran. This auction is for the following autographed 4x6 photograph of R.V. Burgin who was the inspiration of HBO’s The Pacific ten part miniseries. I will also include an unsigned postwar printed in uniform 4x6 photograph of Mr. Burgin for free. BIO: R.V. Burgin (Deceased 2019) WWII 1942-1945 K/3/5 Battle of Cape Gloucester, Battle of New Britain, Battle of Peleliu, Battle of Okinawa, Bronze Star (3rd highest military decoration) and Purple Heart. He was a United States Marine and American author. As a young man, he served in the Pacific Theater during World War II. Burgin was the author of the memoir Islands of the Damned: A Marine at War in the Pacific (with William Marvel). Burgin is portrayed in the HBO miniseries The Pacific by Martin McCann. Burgin himself appears in documentary footage during the miniseries. Early life and family: Burgin was born to Joseph Harmon Burgin and Beulah May (née Perry) Burgin in Jewett, Texas. He attended and graduated from Jewett High School in 1940 where he had been Captain of the football team. Burgin's younger brother, Joseph ("Joe" or "J.D.") Delton (March 24, 1926 – February 17, 1945) joined the United States Army, after changing his year of birth from 1926 to 1925, and was sent to Europe, as a member of Company "C", 274th Infantry Regiment, 70th Infantry Division ("Trailblazers"). Joseph died in Alsace-Lorraine on February 17, 1945, when he was killed by artillery fire near the river Saar and the town of Forbach, as they moved east toward Saarbrücken on the other side of the river, as part of a push against the Siegfried Line. He is buried at the Sardis Cemetery next to his parents. Military Career: Burgin joined the United States Marine Corps on November 13, 1942, during World War II and was assigned to the 9th Replacement Battalion. He soon became a mortarman in K-Company, 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st Marine Division (K/3/5),[1] and fought in the Pacific War at Cape Gloucester, then alongside his friends Eugene Sledge and Merriell "Snafu" Shelton, on Peleliu, and Okinawa. Burgin was promoted to the rank of sergeant upon reaching Okinawa. He was awarded a Bronze Star for his actions in the Battle of Okinawa on 2 May 1945, when he destroyed a Japanese machine gun emplacement that had his company pinned down. He also was going to be put in for a Silver Star by Captain Andrew "Ack-Ack" Haldane for taking out a pillbox on Peleliu, but Haldane was killed by sniper fire before he could submit it. HBO’s “The Pacific” ten part miniseries BACKGROUND HBO’s ten part miniseries titled “The Pacific” was Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg part two or companion piece of the popular HBO miniseries “Band of Brothers”. HBO’s “The Pacific” can currently be viewed on Netflix, Amazon, YouTube, HBO and many other streaming services. The Pacific miniseries features the USMC 1st Marine Division's battles in the Pacific; such as Guadalcanal, Cape Gloucester, Peleliu, and Okinawa, as well as Basilone's involvement in the Battle of Iwo Jima. Steven Spielberg has been quoted saying that “The Pacific” was significantly more challenging to produce and tell the story of WWII in the Pacific compared to that of the Band of Brothers. Whereas the Band of Brothers was able to follow just one companies service; that of Easy Company of the 506th PIR from Currahee through the conclusion of WWII in Europe. The Pacific was significantly more challenging in order to tell the story and horrifically bloody battles of WWII in the Pacific HBO had to use the stories of four different USMC veterans stories to accurately tell the entire history of the Battles of the Pacific Theater of Operations as The Pacific War was composed of significantly more battles making it impossible to use just one unit as was done in the Band of Brothers. However HBO The Pacific miniseries went through the same painstaking process of using the real names of the actually WWII veterans who are portrayed in The Pacific just as they did in the Band of Brothers. HBO’s ten part miniseries “The Pacific” focuses on the USMC experiences of the veterans who served in the same companies with Robert Leckie (H/2/1) How Company, 2nd Battalion, 1st Marines, 1st Marine Division, Eugene Sledge (K/3/5) K Company, 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st Marine Division, Chuck Tatum (B/1/7) Baker Company, 1st Battalion, 27th Marines, 5th Marine Division and John Basilone (B/1/7) Baker Company, 1st Battalion, 27th Marines, 5th Marine Division and C Company, 1st Battalion, 27th Marines, 5th Marine Division of the USMC’s 1st Marine Division.
