Description: Hutchinson, KANSAS - L-Wood Motor Court - Gas Pumps - 1945: Hutchinson is the largest city and county seat in Reno County, Kansas, United States, and located on the Arkansas River. It has been home to salt mines since 1887, thus its nickname of "Salt City", but locals call it "Hutch". As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 40,006. On Jan. 20, 1930, Hutchinson businessman T.W. Woodward announced his plans to build a cottage-style Tourist Camp on the old Gregory Tract at 1000 E. 4th. He was issued a building permit for $10,000 along old U.S. 50 South. The camp would take up an entire block with 15 cottages with garages, outdoor cook house, shower house, filling station, grocery store and barber shop built in the middle of the cottages. There was also a playground for the children. Woodward’s Tourist Home opened in June 1930. About 1945, the facility was sold to Carl Wood and renamed the L-Wood Motor Court & Trailer Park, with a Café & Service Station. In 1954, Dwight Leopold purchased the facility and changed the first name to Elwood. From 1962 to 1978, there were several different owners but the facility continued to slide and was closed in 1978. Between 1978 and 1982 the property was completely cleared and in 1983 the Cowboy Casino was built and Jack Tull was the manager. It was closed in 1985 and reopened in 1987 with Eugene Barnes the manager. It closed again in 1989 and reopened in 1993 by Bill McGraw and renamed McGraw’s Cowboy Casino. After closing in the mid 2000′s the property was vacant until ESSDACK bought it. The building today at 1000 E. 4th is now owned by Samuel Green and mostly used for storage. This Linen Era postcard, mailed in 1945, is in good condition. Artvue Post Cards. New York, N.Y.
