Description: Many black and white illustrations, complete. The eight pages in the back contain advertisements for the Basket Fraternity and "Indian trading stores," an Index, and the list of illustrations for "How to Make Indian and Other Baskets." The first title also has a list of illustrations as well as an Index and Appendix. Slight corner wear and wear at the head and tail of the spine. Crack on interior hinges, which makes the binding feel a little loose, but it's still held together very nicely. Pages are in very good condition. Pages [1]-271 comprise "Indian Basketry." The latter half of the book, Pages [1]-136, comprise "How to Make Indian and Other Baskets." The Contents of the book are as follows: "Introduction," "Basketry, the Mother of Pottery," "Basketry in Indian Legend," "Basketry in Indian Ceremonial," "Basket Making People," "Materials Used in Indian Basketry," "Colors in Indian Basketry," "Basket Forms and Designs; Their Origin and Relation to Art," "Some Uses of Indian Baskets," "Symbolism of Indian Basketry," "The Poetry of Indian Basketry," "Baskets to be Prized," "The Decadence of the Art," "How the Art may be Preserved," "Hints to the Collector," "Bibliography of Indian Basketry," "Appendix," "Index," and "How to Make Indian and Other Baskets." George Wharton James (1858-1923) was an American author, editor, lecturer, journalist, and photographer. Many of his works are about California and the American Southwest.
