Description: Inside U.S.A., John Gunther, 1947, Harpers. - 1st edition. (deduced) - 6 x 8.5; 979 pages. note: the most discerning and complete record of life in post-war America. It includes impressive tables and statistics, and unique picture-maps, but moreso, a sociological study based on his first-hand interviews across the country (see map of his travels inside covers): "...a comprehensive state by state analysis of trends, issues and personalities that introduces America to Americans." - this is the most impressive of Gunther's "Inside" series. Gunther had earlier distinguished himself by his unparalleled books portraying Europe (and particularly Germany) and Asia in the 1935s and 40s, under the shadow of impending WWII. His writing is conversational and engaging. His intellect is readily apparent, but he does Not promote it in his writing. A must-read. Condition: Very Good Condition for this thick hdbk. Cover shows very little wear...lettering is bright, and corners sharp. Owner name inconspicuous inside front cover. Hinges/binding are tight/strong. No apparent age-tanning of paper. Interior is all clean...almost no sign of wear....no folds, tears, stains, marks, etc. DJ was chipped and barely Good, but has been repaired on back and touched up on front, and is now presentable and strong under poly wrap. Very collectible.
