Description: Here's a rare iron pontil 1850s aqua D.L.Ormsby long neck soda bottle from New York ...D.L.O. in large 7/8"tall double outlined letters on front of bottle...... 255 WEST 16th St N.Y. bold emb on back with the number 6 backwards.....iron or graphite pontil in sunken bottom with heavy dark deposit....applied blob top...aqua....round squat with long neck.....7"tall...Excellent condition with only one small shallow chip on base edge; no other damage of any kind. A nice clean bottle....Dorman Leonard Ormsby established his root beer bottling business from his grocery store in 1835. By 1860, his son Leonard was his partner. They were listed in the 1860 New York Directory as "Soda Water Manufacturers" at 423 West 16th St in Manhattan. This early 1850s pontiled bottle probably contained either root beer or soda. Interesting to note....there was a tragic accident in 1861. The New York papers tell of Dorman & Leonard Ormsby being sued for running over a little boy and killing him with their beer delivery wagon . This is the only iron pontil aqua D.L.O. bottle like this I've ever seen! It comes straight out the "Digger Dave & Shovelin Shelley Beeler" Collection...
