Unfortunately, it's usually the latter, and there's no reason why this should be the case; how hard is it to manufacture a hollow tube with a bend in the middle? My kuripes are simple, easy to clean, made of food-safe materials, and sturdy enough to hold up to being shoved in a pocket or a bag without falling apart. No decoration, no adornment, just the tool.
