Other: Early Bonfils view of the biblical walled city at Beth Horon or Bethoron, Israel. This is the Upper Beth Horon village on the route between Jaffa and Jerusalem. Albumen prins by Bonfils carry the title, “Bethoron supérieur (Beit-our-el-foka).” Felix Bonfils (1831-1885) was a French photographer active in the Middle East from the 1860s until his death in 1885. He created a remarkable record of the Middle East second to none. His son, Adrien took over the business upon his father’s death carrying on until around 1900. Additionally, Lydie Bonfils, Felix’s wife continued producing images after that even issuing her own catalog and remaining in the Middle East until forced to evacuate at the beginning of the First World War.
