Rulers of Lithuania - Jogaila and Vytautas the GreatThis is not the first time that the portraits of princes have been depicted on postage stamps - as symbols of the LDK, the portraits of the first Grand Duke of Lithuania Gediminas and the first King of Lithuania Mindaugas, created by A. The Grand Duke of Lithuania and the King of Poland - Jogaila The stamp commemorates the Grand Duke of Lithuania (1377–81, 1382–92) and King of Poland (1386–1434) Jogaila, who started the Jogailai dynasty of rulers of Poland and Lithuania. Having inherited the throne of Lithuania after Algird's death (1377), Jogaila initially shared power with his uncle Kęstučius. 1381 a conflict arose between Jogaila and Kęstutis and his son Vytautas. Kęstutis Jogaila in 1381 arrested and removed from power. The reason for the conflict was Jogaila and the Teutonic Order in 1380. the Davydiškii agreement was concluded, which disregarded the interests of Kęstutis. 1382 Jogaila was freed and he in turn managed to arrest his uncle. After the death of Kęstutis in 1384 Jogaila received an offer from the lords of Lesser Poland to marry Jadwiga, who has the title of King of Poland, and become the king of Poland. At the suggestion of the Polish feudal lords, Jogaila in 1385 August 14 concluded the Treaty of Kreva and united the LDK with Poland. While Jogaila was still the king of Poland, he gradually (1392–1401) had to hand over power in Lithuania to Vytautas. The Grand Duke of Lithuania - Vytautas the Great Vytautas the Great (1350–1430), one of the most famous European politicians and warlords, is immortalized in the €0.55 postage stamp - the Grand Duke of Lithuania from 1392. until death (son of Grand Duke Kęstutis, Jogaila's cousin). 1392 according to the Treaty of Astrava, Vytautas regained the entire Kęstutis homeland, including Traki, and won the right to rule the entire LDK. Despite the rivalry between the cousins, the Polish-Lithuanian union was formed under Jogaila. Jogaila and Vytautas pursued a common foreign policy, which quickly yielded results. First of all, it turned against the Teutonic Order: the war with it was crowned in 1410. The Battle of Žalgiris, which ended with the victory of the Polish and Lithuanian armies. The order lost its aura of invincibility, but remained strong for a long time. Only in 1422 A long-term settlement of relations was achieved in the Black Peace. 1413 The Horodle Treaty granted Vytautas the title of Grand Duke and full independence. From the 16th century Vytautas was regarded as the defender of Lithuania's interests in the beginning of Lithuanian nobility's self-concept. He was considered the greatest ruler of Lithuania who ever ruled, his name embodied the ideal of a ruler. Since the 19th century Vytautas the Great University named after him during the national movement, 1918-1939. many monuments were built to him in Lithuanian cities and towns.
