Oil on Panel Landscape “Twilight” by American Artist George H McCord (1848-1909)

Description: G.H McCord, a native of Brooklyn, NY, was a 2nd Generation Hudson River School Painter. He is best known for his atmospheric landscape and marine paintings. He studied at The Hudson River Institute, The Claverack Academy, Claverack, NY, and under Samuel Morse and James Fairman. McCord traveled extensively throughout the US to find inspiration as well as France, Italy and The British Isles. McCord won medals at the New Orleans Exposition, The St. Louis Exposition and at The Mechanics Institute in Boston. He regularly exhibited The National Academy of Design, The Brooklyn Art Association and The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art. His work can be found at The Brooklyn Museum of Fine Art, The Hudson River Museum and The Museum of Fine Art in Boston. This work is titled “Twilight”. McCord was especially adept at painting sunsets. The sun has just set or is about to set behind a rise. The yellows and vivid burnt orange light create a silhouette of the trees, the church steeple and some figures perhaps admiring the glow. The darker foreground reveals twisted tree trunks and even some ducks congregating near the pond. A faint crescent moon serves to complete the composition. The panel measures 10” by 16” and 14 ½” by 20 ½” in the period, gilded wood composition cove frame. The inner cove features a foliate and scroll decoration and the outer rim decoration is an inset grape cluster motif. The artist’s signature can be found on the lower right corner. The title can be found on the label on the verso. The paint surface is in very good and stable condition. There are some areas of craquelure which extends through the trees. The painting is from the 1870s and exhibits areas of darkened varnish which could be cleaned and re-varnished. Otherwise the painting is room-ready to hang in your home, library or office.
