Description: ARTIST: Hjalmar Olsen is a Danish artist of whom relatively little information is available. He was born in Juelsminde in Eastern Jutland in 1889 and found a lot of his landscape scenes in the area around his native town. Besides being an artist, he also worked as a gardener at Gavnø Castle for a while PAINTING: Oil on canvas. The painting is an attractive rendering of the landscape leading down to the bay near Juelsminde. The rolling landscape in the foreground is characterized by heather and scattered pine bushes and one can also just make out an old, thatched house next to the row of pine trees in the center of the painting. The area immediately in front of the water is more flat and grassy and in the background is an inlet stretching into the bay known as Bjørnsknude(litt. “Bear’s knot”). With its around 4000 inhabitants, Juelsminde is a relatively small town, but due to its strategic location, the town is known to have existed from at least the Middle Ages onwards. I’ll date the painting to somewhere between 1960-1980. Signed: “Hj. Olsen” in the lower left corner. SIZE: With frame: 57,5 cm/22.6" * 49,5 cm/19.5". Without frame: 46,5 cm/18.3" * 38,5 cm/15.2". CONDITION: The painting is in great ready-to-hang condition - no holes, tears or missing paint. The frame has minor scratches and stains.
