Description: Original 1863 antique map with decorative scrollwork border, hand colored by county. It is titled "Johnson's Scotland" and has two insets: Orkney Isles and Shetland Isles. The image area measures 40 x 30.5 cm [15¾" x 12"], and the map shows wagon roads, steam railroads, canals, cities, towns, villages, battle fields, and natural features, with topography drawn in relief. Longitude is measured from Washington and Greenwich. There are hundreds of named places and features, including Edinburgh, Inverness, Glasgow, Lanark, Isle of Mull, Aberdeen, Loch Ness, Dumfries, Tweed River, Stirling, Solway Firth, Peebles, Killierankie Pass, Perth, Hebrides Isles, and Berwick. The map was published by Johnson & Ward, 113 Fulton Street, New York, 1863, and it is an original, authentic antique map, not a reproduction or modern reprint, and it is fully guaranteed to be genuine. The Johnson & Ward firm was one of America's pre-eminent mid-19th century map and atlas publishers, and their maps are proudly displayed in fine libraries and private collections around the world. Johnson's maps were engraved on steel plates and then transferred to lithographic stones for printing, which resulted in a high quality product. Each map was then individually hand colored. Condition: This map is in very good condition, bright and clean, with no rips or tears. There's a narrow margin and some scattered spotting along the left edge.
