Description: Beagle, Peter S. THE LAST UNICORN. NY: Viking Press, 1968. 1st edition. With no mention of edition or printing on the copyright page, which indicates that this is the correct 1st edition, 1st printing for Viking Press books of that period of time. This is NOT a book-club book. This is NOT an ex-library book. Buyer beware: there were at least two later printings of THE LAST UNICORN that were published in this exact hardcover format and also in similar, but slightly different, hardcover formats. This is the real deal: the true 1st edition, 1st printing. SCROLL DOWN THIS PAGE IMMEDIATELY TO SEE THE CONDITION OF THIS BOOK AND THIS DUST JACKET. Peter S. Beagle was born in 1939 in Manhattan. He was raised in the Bronx in New York. He graduated from the Bronx High School of Science in 1955. He gained early recognition from The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, and he won a scholarship to the University of Pittsburgh, partially for a poem he wrote as a high school senior. He graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a degree in creative writing. After spending a year overseas, he held the graduate Stegner Fellowship in creative writing at Stanford University at a time when Ken Kesey, Gurney Norman, and Larry McMurtry were in the same locale. Beagle wrote his first novel, A FINE AND PRIVATE PLACE, when he was only 19 years old. He followed that with a memoir, I SEE BY MY OUTFIT, in 1965. Beagle’s most famous book, THE LAST UNICORN (offered here), was his second novel, published in 1968. Peter Beagle indicates that he was highly influenced by THE WIND IN THE WILLOWS by Kenneth Grahame, and that that book influenced Beagle to try writing fantasy fiction. During the 1970’s, Beagle became a screenwriter. Among other things, he wrote the screenplay for the 1978 Ralph Bakshi animated version of “The Lord of the Rings”. During the 1990’s Beagle wrote the teleplay for “Sarek”, episode 71 of the legendary television series Star Trek: The Next Generation. THE LAST UNICORN was made into an animated film of the same name in 1982. From 2003 through 2011 Beagle was involved in a legal dispute with Granada Media International, the controller of the rights to the movie, and in 2011 it was announced that an agreement was reached regarding the film rights and various merchandise developments related to the movie. Peter S. Beagle is the author of such great and famous books as A FINE AND PRIVATE PLACE, I SEE BY MY OUTFIT, THE LAST UNICORN (offered here), THE CALIFORNIA FEELING, LILA THE WEREWOLF, AMERICAN DENIM, THE LADY AND HER TIGER, THE FANTASY WORLDS OF PETER S. BEAGLE, THE GARDEN OF EARTHLY DELIGHTS, THE FOLK OF THE AIR, THE INNKEEPER’S SONG, IN THE PRESENCE OF THE ELEPHANTS, and many, many more. From the dust jacket: “ . . . THE LAST UNICORN . . . A FINE AND PRIVATE PLACE, Peter Beagle’s first book, was written before he was twenty. ‘A most unusual novel,’ Virgilia Peterson said in her review, ‘by a young man who seems to be a genuine nonconformist . . . armed already with the wryness of experience but brave enough still to venture where many of his elders might well fear to tread.’ In his second novel this inventive, original writer -- still under thirty -- ventures still further, into the literally fantastic, literally fabulous world of fairy tale, myth, dream, nightmare . . . True to tradition, THE LAST UNICORN is the story of a quest, the search by the unicorn -- immortal, infinitely beautiful -- for her lost fellows. Early on, she is joined by Schmendrick the Magician -- a name pointing to the low comedy that surprisingly (though also traditionally) coexists here with terror, pathos, tenderness, paradox, and wit, and frequent passages where the prose bursts into song and into poetry itself. A kind of upside-down Merlin, Schmendrick is looking for something for himself too, his life perhaps. Molly Grue, the third of the travelers, seems simply to embody every womanly trait. After a richly entertaining variety of adventures -- with splendid, quirky characters -- the search reaches its climax at the castle of evil King Haggard, where the terrifying Red Bull is encountered and where the handsome Prince Lir plays his predestined role . . . Like Tolkien’s THE LORD OF THE RINGS, this odd, evocative, and brilliant book utilizes an imaginary world to connect profoundly with the real questions and aspirations of thoughtful and sensitive readers. THE LAST UNICORN may well join that widely read masterpiece as a book that speaks with a mysterious but tangible resonance to a receptive audience . . . “ From the rear flap of the dust jacket: “ . . . PETER S. BEAGLE, born in New York City in 1939, was graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in 1959. His first book, the novel A FINE AND PRIVATE PLACE, was published the following year. He lived in Paris and traveled in France, Italy, and England and then spend a year at Stanford University on a Writing Fellowship. His second book, ISEE BY MY OUTFIT, an account of a cross-country trip by motor scooter, was published in 1965. Mr. Beagle has published stories and articles in The Atlantic and Holiday, among other periodicals. He lives in Santa Cruz, California . . . “ From the rear panel of the dust jacket: “ . . . THE LAST UNICORN flows onward in a fine blend of sheer fantasy and shameless fun, in an alternation of rough parody and tender purity. Beagle plays with a lively prose that has a habit of turning unexpectedly -- and effectively -- into a poetry that is sometimes sensuous, sometimes nonsensical. Lewis Carroll, Hans Christian Andersen, both Grimm brothers, Bulfinch, and Malory must have been looking over Beagle’s shoulder and smiling approvingly while he wrote this wild, whimsical, and, in the end, wonderfully touching fairy-tale. It is magic with a touch of majesty . . . “ -- LOUIS UNTERMEYER. Some of the awards and award nominations that Peter S. Beagle has been honored with: 1968: THE LAST UNICORN. Clearly Peter S. Beagle is one of the best, most important, most famous, and most collectible fantasy fiction authors in the world (and of all time). ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ I grade books and dust jackets: fine, near fine, very good, good, fair, and poor. I describe all faults. If you sell books on EBAY (or anywhere else), it is de rigueur not to list 1st printings of book club books as 1st editions (unless they ARE the 1st edition, which occurs only occasionally); also, a 1st edition, 7th printing, is not a 1st edition. Ex-library books must be noted as such since generally they are of little value to the collector of 1st editions. Condition is also very important to those collectors. Books and dust jackets must be described in detail. In other words, it is incumbent upon the SELLER to know what is and is not a 1st edition. Mistakes can be made (and corrected), of course, but if you DON'T KNOW, don't try to sell a book as a 1st edition. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ CONDITION: An ABOUT FINE book in a NEAR FINE (or better) dust jacket. The book is tight and square in its black quarter-cloth and blue boards binding with silver-blue, yellow, and purple lettering on the spine of the book. The book has the required plum-colored endpapers. There is no writing in the book; no bookplates; no remainder marks. The publisher’s dark pink topstain is virtually unmarred. The dust jacket is not price-clipped and shows the correct 1st issue price of $4.95. There are no chips and no wrinkling to the dust jacket. The edges of the dust jacket have some slight nicks at the edges that are essentially not visible unless one removes the Brodart dust jacket protector. Please note that any "shininess" or glare in the photos of the dust jacket are due to the dust jacket protector that in on the dust jacket; the dust jacket has no stains or marks or discolorations. The great and famous dust jacket design is by Mel Williamson. 1st edition, 1st printing copies of THE LAST UNICORN are very scarce and desirable. I use the EBAY shipping system to send out the majority of the books that I sell. Insurance is included in the shipping charges for this book that the buyer will be paying. One would assume that the buyer would want to insure this book for its correct value. A MUST FOR THE COLLECTOR OF IMPORTANT MODERN FANTASY FICTION 1st EDITIONS AND/OR THE COLLECTOR OF AWARD-WINNING 1st EDITIONS AND/OR THE COLLECTOR OF PETER S. BEAGLE 1st EDITIONS! ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Additional photos are available upon request. I am continuing to list some of my best books (especially science fiction, fantasy, and horror 1st editions) on EBAY not so much as auctions (due to the fact that EBAY charges quite a bit to list items for reserve auctions), but more along the lines of listing my "catalogue" of books that I have for sale. I'm not going to “give” these books away, but my opening bids and Buy-It-Now prices are usually a fair amount below market value. Furthermore, however, for certain scarce books in great condition, I do expect to get close to what they're worth. Stay with me; I always have a number of important, collectible, cornerstone science fiction, fantasy, and horror 1st editions listed. Many thanks! All items are being offered for sale elsewhere; I reserve the right to end this listing early if this item sells elsewhere. __________________________________________________________________________________ Note: I own the following two books: Leckie, Anne. ANCILLARY JUSTICE. Subterranean Press, 2014. 1st limited edition. (#2/500). Leckie, Anne. ANCILLARY MERCY. Subterranean Press, 2016. 1st limited edition. (#2/500). I am looking for: Leckie, Anne. ANCILLARY SWORD. Subterranean Press, 2015. 1st limited edition. (#2/500). I would like to round out this set by acquiring the #2/500 copy of ANCILLARY SWORD. If anyone has this copy and is willing to sell it on EBAY, I would be highly interested in obtaining it so that all my copies would have matching numbers. Many thanks. __________________________________________________________________________________ Contact me if you're looking for a particular title or titles. I have thousands of books for sale that may or may not show up in my EBAY listings. I am happy to set up flexible PAYMENT and/or HOLD PLANS for any book(s) that you bid on and win. Shipping: $4.00 for USPS Media Mail shipping. $10.00 for USPS Priority Mail shipping. Buyers who wish to have packages sent to addresses outside of the U.S. are required to pay for the postage necessary to send such packages. Please note: if you want something other than USPS Media Mail shipping, you must wait for me to send you an EBAY invoice or if you are a buyer outside of the United States, you must wait for me to send you an EBAY invoice. You must be willing to pay for non-USPS Media Mail shipping charges or for international shipping charges. I reserve the right to negate a purchase if you are unwilling to pay for the correct shipping charges either to an address in the U.S. or if international shipping is required. I am happy to set up flexible payment and layaway plans if these options make it easier for you to participate in bidding and winning. Please e-mail me if you have any questions. See my other auctions on EBAY for excellent science fiction, fantasy, and horror 1st editions (and a few other items). I specialize in science fiction, fantasy, and horror 1st editions: award winners, cornerstone books, and generally recognized important books in the genre(s). I GUARANTEE THE CONDITION OF THIS BOOK; IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT, SEND IT BACK! If you prefer payment methods other than PayPal (as I do), I am happy to arrange for a different payment method for you. Before you buy from others, check out their return policies and their guarantees and compare them to mine. I stand behind all of my items FULLY. Why deal with a seller who won't guarantee their books, doesn't have a return policy, or doesn't correctly describe the edition or condition of their book(s)?
