Platycodon grandiflorus is a herbaceous perennial in the Campanulaceae family. Its native range is from southeastern Siberia to Japan and China. Familiar names include Balloon Flower or Chinese Bellflower. It is commonly grown in the mountains and fields. This species produces white, blue, pink, and purple blooms and smells like an unopened balloon. They are used in culinary dishes for their roots cooked in bi bim bap or bi bim bop dishes, as well as other dishes. It can grow to around 2 feet tall and a foot wide from its thick roots, emitting a white liquid when cut. The dark blue-green leaves are 2-5 inches long with small teeth on the edges. The flowers are in bloom in July and August. The crown of the flower is divided into five branches in the shape of an open bell. These will die to the ground and come back every year. It prefers to grow in full sun to part shade with average water needs. Zones 3-9 Germination Mix equal parts of potting soil, vermiculite, and peat moss. Press seeds down into the media. Spread some long-fibered sphagnum moss on top of the potting media. Mist with a spray bottle. Cover the seed tray with clear plastic to maintain a 64-75F. Uncover and mist as needed to keep the media moist. Place under a bright indirect light until germination.
