A rare fundraising cookbook compiled by a women's missionary society in the diverse Boyle Heights neighborhood of Los Angeles. According to newspaper records, the society raised funds for the relief of local families, and to support ministers in frontier regions of the Methodist church, including those tending to Native American communities in the Southwest. The group was attached to the Boyle Heights Methodist Episcopal Church, which, according to a 1917 Methodist church report, held a weekly sunday school that included fifty "foreign" students, including Armenian, Mexican, Chinese, and Japanese children. The cookbook begins with a section of household hints and menus, followed by recipes, including Long Beach picnic cake, scripture cake (two recipes), Kentucky squirrel soup, and Spanish curry soup. There is also a four page section of Mexican recipes (headed "Spanish Dishes"), including enchiladas, guisado de frijoles, and tortillas de mais. The contributor of each recipe is named.
