Oct. 10, 1938), is a Japanese photographer noted for his images depicting the breakdown of traditional values in post-war Japan. Born in Osaka prefecture, he studied photography under Takeji Iwamiya before moving to Tokyo in 1961 to work as an assistant to Eikoh Hosoe. There he produced a a body of work entitled Nippon Gekijo Shashin-cho which showed the darker sides of urban life and the lesser seen parts of cities. He started working as a freelance in 1963, publishing his ‘Yokosuka’ series in the ‘Camera Mainichi’ monthly magazine in 1965. He continued to publish work in various photographic magazines and the high-contrast, grainy images he produced during the sixties and seventies were criticized as 'coarse, camera-shaken and blurred', but were to causing a revolution in the Japanese photographic world. Forever questioning the meaning of photography, his early, ‘Japan, A Photo Theater’ (1968), the controversial ‘Farewell Photography’ (1972) examined photographic expression, ‘Light and Shadow’ (1982) marked his comeback after a creative slump, and his latest, ‘Hawaii’ (2007) attracted great attention. Moriyama's style is synonymous with that of Provoke magazine, which he was involved with in 1969. In 2012 he was honored by the International Center Photography with an Infinity Award for Lifetime Achievement. For fans of Nobuyoshi Araki, Daido Moriyama, Hiroshi Hamaya, Masahisa Fukase, Eikoh Hosoe, the Provoke Magazine era including Yutaka Takanashi, Takuma Nakahira, Koji Taki, Takahiko Okada, as well as Domon Ken, this will be of interest Sale as is, No return.
