Bagration entered the Russian army as a sergeant in the Kavsansk Rifles, Astrakhan Infantry Regiment in 1782, beginning a thirty-year career in the Russian Army. His merits were recognized by Suvorov, whom he accompanied in the Italian and Swiss campaign of 1799, winning particular distinction by the capture of the town of Brescia. As a commander of the rear guard of the Russian army, Bagration covered the withdrawal of the campaign from Switzerland. In the Russian-Swedish War of 1808-1809, Bagration was the first commander of the division, which occupied the Aland Islands, then the first commander of corps, committed the famous ice shift on the Gulf of Bothnia to Stockholm, which decided the victorious outcome of the war. In 1809, Pyotr Bagration was promoted to full General of Infantry. In the war of 1812, Bagration commanded the 2nd army of the West. During the battle of Borodino he received a mortal wound and later died. For 30 years of service Bagration took part in 20 campaigns and 150 battles. He was loved by the army, distinguished calm in danger, had courage and a deep knowledge of the art of war. Pyotr Bagration was awarded a lot of Russian and foreign orders for his courage, bravery and military skill, and a premium weapon - a golden sword decorated with diamonds, with the inscription “For Bravery”.
