Description: Schmidt & Co Victoria Austria Large Mantle Vase Hand Painted 1891-1918 Carlsbad A beautiful PITCHER Vase Ewer made by SCHMIDT & Co. "VICTORIA" in Carlsbad, Austria HAND PAINTED with GOLD Accents on Flowers & Embossing, circa 1891-1918 DESCRIPTION: The artwork on this is beautiful with the pirate's face almost popping out from under the spout. On the front of the left handed pitcher, there is a beautiful floral display that is outlined in gold . The embossing at the top is also outlined in gold. It was typical for Victoria not to paint the gold on the back! The back has gold only on the embossing and the nautical figurehead (which is also referred to as as Neptune's wooden angel -- on the bow of the old sailing ships). The leaves are tastefully colored in green, blue and warm yellow giving a bronze effect. The artist who designed this pitcher was obviously very talented as was expected for Victoria decorators. CONDITION: The condition of this pitcher is excellent. We can find no defects and only minor damage. The only (age appropriate) gold wear is on the handle. Consult the photos. There is also a tight hairline across the pirate's face that can be seen in photos #9 & #10. There are no chips, nicks, cracks, or other hairlines. Otherwise, the gold appears to be in excellent shape. See the photos to judge its beauty for yourself. As collectors ourselves, we tend to be very picky. DIMENSIONS: This stands 7 1/8" high. Handle to opposite side, the measurement is 4". The maximum diameter at the base is 3 1/8". The top diameter is 1 3/4". HISTORY/MARKS: Importers Lazarus and Rosenfeld Ltd. based in London, with showrooms in NYC, Australia & South Africa was founded in 1883. The Victoria Porzellanfabrik is in a suburb of Carlsbad in Altrohlau, Bohemia, Austria. Two years later, this factory was sold to Frank Schmidt under whose guidance it became the largest factory in the famed Carlsbad porcelain district. The choice of location was no accident due to the entire region being in the Ore Mountains which is the home of many Kaolin mines. Kaolin is an essential ingredient for the manufacturing of high quality hard paste porcelain. Production concentrated on fine quality decorative household and hotel porcelain. Marshal Fields Department Store was their major US importer, allowing "Victoria" Schmidt & Co. to employ 975 workers by 1900. The mark on this is the brown over glaze mark #22 cited in Robert E. Rontgen’s Marks on German, Bohemian and Austrian Porcelain 1710 to the Present. This mark was used in the 1891-1918 time period. Listing and template services provided by inkFrog
