So how did this change of heart come about? Well one afternoon while preparing for a offshore fishing trip the guy we invited was right there to lend a hand and load the boat and sort the bait, I ask him if he had a knife I could open the Ribbon fish package with and he hands me a Spyderco Knife made in China called a "Tenacious", In complete disbelief I all but starting laughing out loud and asked him why he would waste his time and money on a knife made in China. The Guy almost took a swing at me "This was Almost Gonna Come To Blows Real Quick Like" but he went on to explain who Spyderco was and where they were located. The Guy knew his Spydies and he really liked them and he went on to tell me it wouldn't rust here at the ocean and was better suited for the job at hand than my Old Timer by Schrade, Now I'm the guy that's about to throw a punch but after using the Tenacious and carrying it throughout the entire trip of four days and nights I threw my Old Schrade in the tool drawer and have carried a Spyderco ever since. There's plenty of good reasons to own and collect Old USA made Schrade's and Camillus Knives as well as Case knives and many different German made Knives but I'll tell you just what I was told and it will make perfect sense to you and best of all it happens to be a bonified fact. The Steels of yesteryear were the thing of the times and there was no better, today they've created what many refer to as "SUPER STEELS" They've also created Scientifically proven Super handle materials that are far more superior to anything we had in the old days, simply put the handle materials of yesteryear were good for what they were at the time, they were great advancements in the cutlery industry but today they're putting G-10 Carbon handles with Bi-Directional texturing and carbon Fiber Handles and the list goes on and on. One thing that is forsure though today's knives have a longer life span not only from superior materials being used but because Far less of them are being accidentally dropped in the Ocean because the handle grips were slick or falling apart or altogether missing which has always been a problem with older handle materials used throughout the Cutlery industry. In the 1950's NASA was put in place and the folks at DuPont started making what I refer to as "Super Plastics" When Delrin and Staglon were born and eventually released to the industry in 1967, the Cutlery Industries across our globe was instantly transformed forevermore. Then Folks started experimenting with Carbon Fibers, Plexiglass and Fiberglass and the resins used to adhere themselves together and today we have an array of Superior Handle materials and Less Knives are being dropped accidentally than ever before. I haven't even touched on the fact that the Safety Implications are Massive and Scientifically Proven Facts.
