Description: A limited edition facsimile of ‘A Book of Nouns’ published in 1806 by Darton and Harvey, of 55 Gracechurch Street, London. This charming children’s book is a faithful copy of an original example of a miniature book, of which very few have survived. The text and illustrations are printed on acid-free Fabriano® laid paper which closely matches the original. The text block is hand-sewn using linen thread. The spine is leather and the boards are covered in Payhembury® marbled paper with an early nineteenth-century pattern. The overall dimensions of the book are (45 x 56mm, 1¾ x 2¼ inches), 128 pages. Each book also contains a specially written short history of the book and the publishing business of William Darton (1755-1819), who was the original publisher and engraved the illustrations. Each copy is numbered (strictly limited to 100 copies), signed and dated by the publisher/bookbinder. Handmade in England. This facsimile is available with three different coloured quarter leather spines: Tan, Red (both based on originals) and Blue (see photo). Please indicate which you would prefer. If no preference indicated I will ship the next available colour in the numbered sequence. ‘A Book of Nouns, or, Things which may be seen’ was first published in 1800 and was followed by two further editions in 1806 and 1814 (Darton G123). An edition of the book was also printed in the United States by Jacob Johnson in Philadelphia in 1804. Original copies of any of the imprints are extremely rare.
