Description: INEVITABLY, IN A SMALL BOOK covering so wide a field, it is impossible to treat the subject fully enough to satisfy either the author or the reader. Some aspects of the Phoenicians and their culture are not touched on at all; others only in the most summary fashion. I hope, however, that in spite of its limitations the book will provide some general picture of the Phoenicians at the time when this comparatively small group of people was a force to be reckoned with throughout the Mediterranean, and beyond, and that it will help also to indicate their place in the story of the nations. In the homeland I have tried to differentiate the Phoenicians of the coastal belt from the Canaanites as a whole and have even omitted - very largely - the earlier history of that belt, for it was not until the late Bronze Age that 'Phoenicia and 'the Phoenicians, as we now understand the terms, came into being. This will explain, if it does not excuse, the small part that the great French excavations at Byblos and Ugarit play in my story. They would take their place more appropriately in a companion volume on the Canaanites, which would cover, too, the prolific finds on key Palestinian sites such as Megiddo and Hazor. The literature about the Phoenicians is immense and so widely scattered in many languages that it would take a life time to digest. The books that I have primarily used are in dicated in my bibliography. There are many others that I could well have consulted had time allowed, but I hope I have not missed anything really vital. Not only are there many books, however: they often express many divergent opinions. It is not possible within the space allotted to me to explain these different view points and leave the reader to form his own judgment. I (from preface)
